Obituary for Firefighter Thomas M. Hennessy

Thomas “Tom” McCarthy Hennessy, 52, of Nokesville, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2022.

On July 16, 1969, Tom was born to Thomas Francis Hennessy and Kathleen Ann Hennessy in Buffalo, New York. After graduating from Lafayette High School in 1987, he went on to study Education at D’Youville College. Tom graduated from Southern New Hampshire University in 2021, where he studied Information Technology with a concentration in Cyber Security.

In 1997, Tom moved to Arlington, Virginia, and landed his first job as a Customer Service Representative with IBM. This move was the catalyst for his 23-year career in Information Technology. In 2002, Tom met his wife, Jennifer, and went on to have two sons, Thomas and Myles. Tom was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt they deserved. He was unendingly proud of Thomas, Myles, and Jennifer and always tried his best to support them.

Tom was passionate about his community. Tom joined the Nokesville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department in 2007 and was an Operational Master Firefighter assigned to Fire Station 5. He was one of the longest-serving members dedicated to the department and the citizens he served. He continually helped junior members advance within the department.

Tom was a service-oriented man. He donated his time to the Nokesville Volunteer Fire Department, the Boy Scouts of America, the Gainesville Pokemon League, Brentsville District Youth Baseball, Prince William Swim League, and other local organizations.

Tom was predeceased by his father, Thomas Francis Hennessy; uncles Peter Hennessy, Joseph Lynch, and Gerry Lynch. Tom is survived by Jennifer, his beloved wife of 18 years; his sons Thomas and Myles; his mother, Kathleen Hennessy; his brothers Kevin Hennessy, Michael Hennessy, Joseph Hennessy; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Tom will be missed by Sonny, his beloved Labrador Retriever, who was always by his side.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the college fund established for his sons, Thomas and Myles, are appreciated.

On May 1, 2022, we will gather together for a celebration of life service at 2:00pm at Pierce Funeral Home at 9609 Center St, Manassas, VA 20110, to remember our wonderful friend who will be greatly missed. Please join us to celebrate the life of Tom Hennessy. Please bring your fondest memories of Tom to share with family and friends. The family is requesting that masks be worn for the service and visitation.
